My advice is to go take a look at it, bring an active working SIM card, put your SIM into it and make a call. Then try to connect to a WiFi network and see if you can browse the web on it. If those work, then odds are good there's nothing wrong with it. Beyond making a call and surfing the web, check for any obvious signs of damage. Check that it's running the latest firmware - in the keypad, type: *3001#12345#*
Under versions it should read 04.04.05_G.

Good luck.

That should have been *3001#12345#* - left off the first star. Sorry.

It's so easy to upgrade them an unlock them, the firmware is not that important. But if you look under Settings -> General -> About, you'll want to see firmware 1.14 for it to be up-to-date. Otherwise, just do a restore under iTunes to the latest version, and then unlock with iLiberty (mac: http://ipluspwns.com/?q=node/149 ) or ZiPhone (mac or PC: http://download.ziphone.org/ ). They are both easy to use (check a box or two, click a button).

Cool so it really doesn't matter whether it's locked of unlocked..

Nope. It takes less than 5 minutes to unlock them nowadays and it's easy.
