I bought a Duron 700 from buy.com. I was expecting to do the pencil trick on the chip, but was surprised to see that the connections were in tact. I was disappointed because I figured it was an older chip and I wouldn't have any success with o/c.

I went ahead and put it into the KT7 and fired it up. I was very worried when it first displayed the speed as it was booting, it showed the chip as a Duron 600. OK, I really started to panic and get upset. I went into the soft menu and double checked to make sure it was set as a Duron 700 and reset it to 7 x 100. (which it was already set to anyway). I rebooted and it came up this time and showed it was a Duron 700. Very strange!!! :frown:

I still figured I had an old/poor chip. But I went ahead and tried to o/c, I changed it to 8.5 x 100 and I believe I bumped the voltage a tad. I rebooted and was surprised to see it come up as an 850!!! Everything was running fine.

I rebooted and bumped it to 9 x 100 and it came up and is currently running at 900mhz!!! I don't remember what my voltage is, I'll have to double check on that. But I've been running at that speed since the weekend and it's been fine.

I'm running with the stock heat sink/fan. When I get a bit more time to play with it, I'm going to try bumping it up further and see how far it'll go.

Has anyone else come across a chip unlocked from buy.com recently??? I was really expecting to do the pencil trick and when I saw I didn't have to, I really thought I was stuck with a chip that wouldn't o/c. Strange!!!

Any thoughts/comments??????

Thanks!!

I'm using an ABIT KT7 with PC133 memory. The memory is from mwave.com, just their own brand.

This's a known problem. Update your bios and it's ok.

I also have the unlocked Duron 700 from buy.com I am running it at 915mhz at 1.85volt
I just want to try a burn in, because I can get into windows with a cpu speed of around 980mhz. It won't get hot at all, but I'm going to do "the torture test" tonight.
That retail heatsink is pretty good, don't you think? It's quite noisy and spins around 6500rpm.

I think the when it came up as 600 when you first put it in is 'normal'. At least when I unlocked my Duron, it came up as a 600. I had to manually change it. I am running rock solid at 950, 1.825 volts and 44C under full load. Globalwin FOP32-1 HS.
