I just bought the mentioned combo at micro center while they were having one of their specials with hopes of unlocking the other 2 cores. I don't "need" the full 4 cores, but it doesn't hurt to try. So when I unlock the cores in the BIOS, I can get the PC to POST, but it then goes into a boot cycle. I don't even see the Windows XP splash screen. If I choose to boot into safe mode however, the PC does boot fine. I have a copy of Ubuntu 10.04, but I can't get my bluetooth mouse/keyboard to work so I haven't tried to boot into it with all 4 cores unlocked. I also attempted to unlock 3 cores, but the same symptoms as above occurred. Anybody have any secret tricks or software side tweaks that will unlock the other 2 (or 1) core(s)?

Much appreciated

If this should be in the CPU/General Hardware forum, please let me know and I'll move it.

it doesn't look like you have a healthy quad. the only thing you can try is notching up the vcore until the normal xp startup can finish. then do some synthetic testing.

if you don't want to increase your voltage, you should be able to run linx, prime, OCCT, etc from safe mode. they will likely crash quickly and/or single out the flawed core(s).

That's a bummer to hear. I was hoping to get something for nothing. I'll give your suggestion a try and see how it goes. Thanks for the quick response.
