Unlock a AT&T BB9000 by calling AT&T without having a sim card?

A coworker of mine is about to break his AT&T contract and junk his BB9k because he has shitty reception in his house. This is where i come in =)

I read online there are two ways to do it:
(a) illegal software that wasn't meant to be leaked
(b) call AT&T and ask for the code that you can input to the phone

is it possible to do (b) even if one does not have a simcard in the phone? I would prefer not to ask him to unlock the phone for me because i don't want to put any extra hassle on him since i'm already getting the phone for a great deal. But when i turn on my current phone (samsung E335) without a sim card it won't do anything...i just get a screen that says "please place in sim card"; if i put a card for a different carrier it gives me some sim card error.

Of course if AT&T says "nope, we won't give it to you" then i'll have to reassess 😉
 
Have your friend call them and tell them he has plans to travel internationally and needs to be able to use another SIM while abroad. If he's been with them for a while and his account is in good standing, they should give the necessary code.
