UPDATE: Posted on I-Hacked.com.

Thanks hevnsnt

------------------------
I noticed a post about xcelis the other day on how you can use their $9.99/month service to get Unlimited Free Minutes using your exisiting Mobile2Mobile minutes. So I headed over to HowardForums to get the scoop on what's this is all about. The biggest complaint ppl had was security since you are just letting this other company reroute your calls to a VoIP provider.

Well, I found craigg's post and started doing some research on his Do-It-Yourself method. The switching is mostly automated and easy to setup so that's not a big deal.

I guess this could be considered a Hot Deal... but I'll be Mod conscience on this one.

EDIT: Before you thread crap, the cost/benefits from this would really be seen from ppl that have very high minute plans and receive alot of calls. With this method, you can drop to the cheapest unlimited M2M plan. And port your cellphone # to a VoIP provider. (That would handle the incoming calls.)

From the looks of that setup, it sounds like any money youd save on having extra minutes will be completely used up on buying the equipment necessary to make it work.

What hardware is required? Do you need a VoIP contract? (I can't view the PDF where I'm at - my acrobat is FUBARed and I can't install the latest verson)

Somehow I knew that if I posted something here I would only get threadcrapping... This is for hobbists, DIY ppl, or just anyone that doesn't like their voice calls going through some unknown service. And as most DIY ppl know, there is more than one way to buy things. That's why fleabay made so much money for such a long time.

For you, without the pretty pictures:

HOW IT WORKS: HOW IT WORKS:

Incoming Calls:

Friend calls you from regular POTS phone

Local POTS Provider converts call data to digital information

VoIP Provider receives call and forwards the data to your internet connection

The VoIP device converts data to typical POTS signal

The 2nd cellphone forwards the call to you using your Mobile-to-Mobile Minutes

Outgoing Calls:

Call your 2nd cellphone using your Mobile-to-Mobile Minutes

The call is then intercepted by the Sipura SPA-3000

The Sipura SPA-3000 allows you to input friend?s #
(Similar to calling card)

VoIP device converts data to digital signal

VoIP Provider allows the call to be send around the nation w/o
Long Dist charges

Local POTS Provider receives call and sends to friends home

so if I'm too lazy to click all the product links, assuming you already have VoIP at your house, how much $$ in new equipment do you need?

Don't you have to have an existing cell plan for this to work and then the additional $9.99 plan? So it actually costs more than the $9.99?

Sorry, even though I have a cell phone I'm pretty much a noob on how all different cell plans work.

shen, from the sounds of it, you'd pick the cheapest wireless plan you can that offers unlimited mobile-to-mobile (usually ~$40), then add a 2nd line for $9.99, then do what is described above.

Need a "Dock-n-Talk Cell Phone Station" - $139 and "Sipura SPA-3000" - $99

-Or something similar:
Quoted by: Craigg from Howard Forums
Usually when adding a new line with Cingular / AT&T you can get a free phone. There are often cell sockets to be found on eBay for about $30 and the Sipura SPA 3000 is $100 making this setup come in at about $130.00. It can also be done for less if you already have a compatible terminal adapter with your VOIP service and you can get an FXO/FXS adapter for perhaps $50; however I haven't tested this option

Okay, another question: if both parties have (for example) the Verizon "In" plan (which, I think, includes free calling to anyone else with a Verizon plan,) could someone on a different Verizon phone call the phone in the dock-n-talk station and make free calls anywhere? (hopefully that isn't too confusing)

Yeah, that seems like the best way. The Sipura SPA-3000 does the real work (outgoing call transfer), but the "Dock-n-Talk Cell Phone Station" could be replaced with something similar... Maybe that fast-switching dock that cingular does for $2.99/month? I'm sure those are on fleabay.

Yep. The "Dock-n-Talk Cell Phone Station" would forward the call to the "Sipura SPA-3000" which would allow the original caller to call another number. - Like calling a calling card # then dialing the actual number you want to connect to.

Cool. You could set up your own phone relaying station for all to use (hypothetically speaking :)) I see the cell phone providers doing something about this in the future.

That was an argument for why xcelis may not be worth it. (Cingular just blocks that number) But if you do this, how would they know better?
