apparently AT&T will let you get a prepaid data only package for just 20$ a month.

1. Get a go phone.

2. sign up for cheap package

3. dial # and ask for data package.

Really, if you can't get DSL or cable in your area, perhaps this could be an option? Dunno if cell coverage is better than those other options though.

Still, 20 bucks a month, can't beat it. Hell, perhaps you could use gizmo or skype over this and a smartphone for cheap unlimited cellular?

edit: oh yes, you can use the gophone balance to pay for the data package.

IOW, if you have 20$ of "airtime" you can deduct the cost of the data plan from your airtime

Nice find, wonder if you can use this on one of those 3G wireless laptop cards.

I don't know-- those usually don't have SIM card slots. You'd need to take the thing apart.

What *I'M* wondering is if this would work for the new iPhone...

Just a heads up, AT&T can indeed see what your using the sim card in. Dunno if they would do anything about it, but they can see what phone its in so I assume they can see if you put it into a wireless laptop card as well.

Good call - makes prepaid iPhones worth it IMHO. On a side note, keep in mind that "unlimited" usually means "capped".

It's would have to be a newer iphone as the edge network is slow and useless.

And AT&T's 3G is even more useless, as the coverage is abysmal. 🙁

At least EDGE has some footprint, and it beats the hell out of GPRS.
