Hi guys,

I'm having a problem with unknown USB device that keeps showing up in my device manager. What's worst is that sometimes it pops in and out as if the device is being discovered, rendering my front panel USB ports unusable and sometimes my keyboard/mice (both are USB) I'm not sure if this is Windows XP related or hardware related. The last thing I did was install Creative Audiogy ZS but have since removed it and its associated drivers.

This is my setup:
WinXP sp2 (with latest update) on AB9 QuadGT, its P965 chipset. There is no additional PCI cards except for Video.

Here is what I did thus far (without success)

1.

* Detach all usb devices, including front panel usb
* Reboot to Safe move, remove all USB entries under device manager
* Shutdown, unplugged for few hours
* Reboot
* Without attaching ANY usb device, check device manger: Unknown usb device still shows up, problem still exists.

2.

* Detach all usb devices
* Reboot, enter bios, disable USB controller
* Boot up Windows, check device manager, shows no usb entries.
* Restart, enter bios, enable USB controller
* Boot up Windows, allowing Windows to recognize USB, check device manager, still unknown usb device.

3.

* RegEdit and remove all entries that I can find with VID000.
reboot

Because of this issue, I have updated BIOS to 1.6 and Intel Chipset driver (latest) from Intel website. The above were all done with the updates.

I'm starting to wonder if the USB ports on my QuadGT is shot.

Anything else I can try?
Help is greatly appreciated!

The next time the device appears in device manager, right click the device, select properties.
Go to details tab.
Then click on the device instance information to highlight it and press ctrl+c to copy the info to the clipboard.

Open notepad and paste the copy there.

Now that you have that , you can find out exactly what it is thats causing the error.

Example on one of my devices is:
PCI\VEN_1317&DEV_0985&SUBSYS_05701317&REV_11\4&2B96F39&0&50F0

Vendor on the above is 1317
Device is 0985

go to http://www.pcidatabase.com/

Enter the info you got from device manager.

Mine from the above was:

Chip Number: an983b
Chip Description: FastNIC 10/100 Fast Ethernet Adapter
Notes: http://www.infineon.com/cgi-bi...programId=34059&progra

That will atleast tell you for sure what the problem device is.
From there you can try to find updated drivers and see if that solves the problem.

Thanks,

The detail tab shows USB\VID_0000@PID_0000\5&17CBE1&0&2

no luck on ID'ing the vendor and hw....

That appears to be an actual usb device plugged in somewhere.
USB uses something similar to PCI ID.
VID = Vendor ID
PID = is the devices function

http://www.linux-usb.org/usb.ids
Has the most current list of usb id codes.

Example a memory stick I have says corsair on it but the id is :
USB\VID_090C&PID_1000\AC00000000000079

090c Feiya Technology Corp.
1000 Memory Bar
1132 5-in-1 Card Reader

Yours is really odd because its not showing either a vendor or function id.

I'm not sure what that could be.
I'll poke around and post if I find something.

First time I've seen this stuff, but a Vendor ID and function both coded 0000?

What are the chances?

I'm voting a short somewhere in the USB circuit.

Good Luck!

Ya, I am starting to think its a short.

I plugged in a USB PCI card and disabled onboard USB, the unknown device no longer showed up...

I had thought this is a IRQ conflict issue but msinfo32 shows every OK.

really really baffeled.

how can I tell if my USB circuits are whacked?

measure using multimeter?

oh frag me,

after getting the USB PCI card up and running, I decided to enable the onboard USB. To my surprise, it worked. plugged all my devices to it. used the comp for 30mins while disabled and ignoring the "unknown device"

then the computer froze. next boot up, nothing is detected, not even the PCI USB card. Cleared CMOS, got everything back, now the onboard works but not the USB PCI. WTH is going on????
