i get this little window on the left side of my desktop almost everytime i tweek a display/visual setting such as wallpaper or refresh rate, but i got this after installing a program for a desktop theme(already uninstalled). the only way im able to get rid of it is to reformat but that's too much of a hassle...how do i get rid of it? desktop screen shot

You're a victim of Spyware.

Ad-aware, Spybot S&D, PestPatrol, MS AntiSpyware should be able to fix it for you. Also consider installing a nice firewall after removing it.

ok.... so i downloaded spybot...scanned... fixed and deleted.---but still there. then i downloaded Ad-aware... did same things... but still there. i tried webroot spysweeper....but still no change...still there. if you had this, it would definitely get on your nerves.

Set classic view for folders in Folder Options (I think in XP it's got something to do with common tasks - it's the top couple of radio buttons on the first tab of the Folder Options anyway). I think that will fix it.

Computer Associates's Pest Patrol 2005. By far the BEST spyware removal tool. I just got it, and it detected 3 pests in my rig. Previously, neither Spybot, Ad-aware nor MS AntiSpyware detected them.

Now I can say I have a "clean" system.

Are you including the zillion safe cookies they classify as bests in that statement?

Granted, PP is a bit paranoid, but those three pests it found in my system were not cookies, they were registry values and some .exe's.

You can always exclude tracking cookies from the pest scan.

Try also:

Display Properties->Desktop, Customize Desktop, Web (tab) - uncheck anything in the "Web pages" box and consider removing whatever is in there (I only have "My Current Home Page").

Does that fix it?

Get rid of your spyware! Pray to god you don't get a vb script error. Then you will have to reformat and that's not a good thing.

Also, right click on desktop and then go to:

Arrange Icons By->Lock Web Items on Desktop

Is that option checked? Still a problem if you uncheck it?
