Unknown device??? What is it trying to install??

Windows keeps trying to install an "Unknown Device" (that's exactly what comes up). Obviously a driver search does nothing, and curiously enough, if I use a pulldown menu to access a folder when Browsing for drivers, there is some gibberish there ( $%^$# <--something like that).

Does anyone have any clue what this could be and how to fix it? I'm at a loss as I've never seen anything quite like it. It'll go into Device Manager and sit there without information.

I'm baffled.

i'm too lazy to look at your systems and since you didn't tell us what you were running for gear i'm gonna throw out a guess for you. i had this same problem with a cusl2-c board. all it took was a trip to the intel site to get the latest chipset and ata drivers. be sure to install the drivers in the right order. i think it was chipset drivers, then ata drivers. it says on the intel site tho. hope this helps,
j

It's an MSI VIA board, not Intel. The strange thing is that I am not running anything differently than what I have in the past -- I just reinstalled Windows a little while ago.

if everything is working screw it, disable it, then you won't have to worry about until use figure what it is. I often get those problems from modem cards since they often have some kind of wave device for voice modem

try reinstalling the via 4-1 drivers!!Maybe that will help or just diconnect it!did you reinstall the 4-1 when you installed win. again??
