"Unknown Device" really UNknown (Solved . . . Mahalo!)

This is a first for me . . . I setup my Soyo TISU MB with onboard audio and modem DISabled.

However, after installing Win98S - I notice in Device Manager there are under "Other Devices" 2 - "?"s each with an "!".

Now the ONLY PCI card I have is a Soundblaster (drivers installed, works fine) and the other is an AGP Radeon (works fine).

I did the installation of the applicable drivers off the MB CD. I even attempted to install drivers for these "unknown devices" by pointing to the MB CD for on-board sound and modem. Nothing.

What hardware do I have that might be unknown? The system runs great and I am at a loss. Shall I just "ignore" them.

The title sounds like a bbspot article!
Anyway, did you disable the onboard devices in bios or does it also have a jumper on mobo to disable? I had a mobo (long time back) that required the jumper setting as well as bios to disable the device completely and it was not documented well in the manual.

Thanks . . . I'm back - took a nap (from frustration - but still nice); Maybe I should write for BBSpot. 🙂

There is a switch on the MB - I also set it to "off"; I'll try "on" (never thought of that - BIOS is DISabled; I'll try "auto") . . . and try mucking about some more . . . even to re-reading the manual (*gasp*).

I was just hoping for a "quick fix". 🙁

If all else fails (after another O/S install and my hair is gone), I'll learn to adapt (ignore it). 🙂

Of course. USB works fine (now with my USB scanner and printer just installed).

I am pretty sure it is the on-board modem and sound. I just haven't nailed it down yet (as I said, this is a "first" for me). 🙁

EDIT: In fact I have "disabled" them and also "removed" them from the Device Manager profile . . . no ill effects on anything as I can tell - yet.

Hmmm, either you (gasp) missed a setting in the BIOS 🙂, or the option to disable really didn't disable. It looks as though the BIOS is trying to assign an IRQ or a memory range to the onboard devices even after they're "disabled." Weird . . .

Good luck,
Nick

I have NARROWED down my search by viewing Device Manager "by connection"

Under "Intel 8215 Processor to AGP Controller 1131"

. . . - Radeon 7200/Radeon

. . . . . - Samsung Synchmaster 955DF(T)
. . . . . - ? (!) Unknown Device
. . . . . - ? (!) Unknown Device

AHA! I am not sure what I am "aha-ing" about but something evidently got missed when I installed my Radeon. Off to check it out . . .

If you don't have the ATI WDM Rage Theater Video and ATI WDM Specialized MVD Codec, then download the ATI capture drivers here. I'm assuming you have the card with VIVO capabilities.

my guess is that they are related to your sound blaster live card (i.e. they are legacy drivers, game port, etc)
take out your sound card and restart your computer, and see if the ?'s go away.

Thanks for the help . . . 🙂

OK, it's not the GART, "Capture components" or the Card drivers (although WIN found some new hardware with the capture components). Soundblaster live all accounted for.

Same double ? unknown . . . 🙁

SO then, What about the "Intel 8215 Processor to AGP Controller 1131"? Isn't this the Southbridge? Something missing off the Motherboard Driver CD that needs updating? (When I went to Soyo, they have very little support for the TISU and the "update" page is missing.)

It's narrowed down (but I have exceeded my Sherlock Holmes "limit" for the day). More Suggestions?

The northbridge (MCH in Intel's terms) controls the "Processor to AGP Controller," not the southbridge. The "8215" is probably the 82815, the official name of the i815 chipset. You might try visiting Intel's 815 product page and downloading the drivers there to see if that updates anything.

Good luck,
Nick

Thanks, "bookmarked". Northbridge . . . of course, you're right. 😱

My solution:

Format C:/ s

And I'll look VERY carefully at EACH install.

I tried the Intel .Inf utility (again) . . . it seemed to find exactly what I was looking for BUT . . . same problem and more additional problems.

EDIT: While I am at it, I just may dump 98SE for WinXP. I let you know what happens.

Oops.. Didn't read something you said, sorry. However, you may still want to give the capture drivers a look. You may need to force the installer (through Device Manager) to update your drivers on the Unknown Device and point it to the folder you extracted the capture drivers to. I think the installer defaults to an ATI folder on your C: drive.

Ack! Don't do that, you simply need to download the ATI Video capture drivers that I mentioned above!

Done! Almost finished with Win98. There was more of a problem than just the capture drivers (I tried them at your suggestion).

Anyway, I have everything at hand for a new install (I didn't use it that much - nothing to "save" just played a bit more Deus Ex).

So Win98>Win98SE>MB drivers>Radeon drivers>SBlive drivers and plug n' pray. I'll be where i was in just over an hour (and i can check each step . . . ).

🙂

Thanks for your help.

I think NateSLC has your reason. What type of Radeon do you have? If it is one with the VIVO capabilities, you need those video capture drivers. For the Radeon's, you need the Video Capture drivers in addition to the Catalyst and Control Panel drivers. 🙂

Hmm . . . moved to "Operating Systems" . . . Well it DID start out as a Hardware question . . . the "highly technical (picky)" Mod must be on duty. 😀

Anyway, it was NOT the "capture drivers" - or IF it was, it was obscured by other problems with HARDWARE conflicts or maybe O/S problems - the reinstall seems indicated (at least for a learning for me).

Ok, but here's a tip for you before you install your Radeon Catalyst drivers. Install the drivers but don't reboot as it suggests. Immediately install your capture drivers after THEN reboot. What happens is when you install the Catalysts, Windows detects the two capture driver components upon reboot. If you have installed them, it will properly identify them, if not it will persist with the unknown device behavior until you get nasty and force it to look in the proper place.

Good luck.
Nate

Tell me, do you have the i815E Firmware Security Hub listed in your devices?

If not, then that's probably it. Install the latest version of the Intel Chipset Inf drivers.

SOLVED!

It was the "Capture drivers". However, I had to remove my SBlive to properly install them - I forgot that the Radeon doesn't like sharing an IRQ with it.

Thanks to you all!!!! 😀 (and without messing with XP!)

Strange.. My SBLive plays nice, but that's probably because I have an AMD/VIA chipset... 😉

Does your SBlive coexist on the same IRQ as your Radeon? Strange . . . My friends usually bring me VIA chipsets to help with their hardware problems. 😀 But this Soyo MB is a little "odd" and not terribly well-supported by Soyo . . . I can't complain as it was really cheap and O/C's my Tually pretty well (25+%).

Actually, at the moment, my SBLive is on IRQ3 and my Radeon is at IRQ12. I'm using an Epox 8K7A (AMD northbridge, Via 686B southbridge). In fact, I have had my SBLive on a KT133A (Epox 8KTA3) board and Win2k stuck all my devices on one IRQ (or reported as such) with no issues. In fact, I have never had a problem with my SBLive. Thought I did once but it was something else. I think I'm lucky.

You ARE lucky!

Actually my SBlive doesn't want to install anymore . . . so, off I go to mess with forcing IRQs.

If worst comes to worst - I don't care about TV "capture" with this system - (I do my video editing through my firewire card anyway) I will just live with my sblive and "unknown" hardware (now that I know what it is). Actually, I need to learn about the "onboard" sound when I sell this system . . . unless I buy a newer soundcard for my coming upgrade.
