i have a soyo dragon lite kt333 motherboard and i just upgraded from a 2100+ to a barton 2500+ cpu and i get a unknown cpu at bootup. everything else is booting up fine. it recognizes my cpu as an "unknown 1466mhz cpu". do i need to upgrade bios? if so, is it worth the risk?

thanks for the help

it prolly just doesnt recognize it cause your running it at an unknown speed. Basically, my 2100+ oced past 3200+ speeds comes up athlon unknown. it should be fine

shouldn't the mhz be higher though?

i did some reading on the soyo site and they say the kt333 doesn't support bartons

http://www.soyousa.com/kb/kbdesc.php?id=16

i'm probably going to get the 2600+thoroughbred (which is listed as a 333mhz on outpost.com) but my mobo info says the kt333 only supports 200/266 mhz FSB for athlon/xp cpu

and

200/266/333 mhz FSB DDR transfer on athlon and duron cpu address and data buses

with the new bartons line out this makes it very confusing, can anyone sort out this mess.
can my mobo support the barton 2500+? or can i upgrade to a thoroughbred 2600+ for a better peace of mind

thanks

I believe as long as your CPU can post and actively run windows and other aps, your Barton does indeed work and is supported in that motherboard. The motherboard may not recogonize it correctly, but it still works, so, if this is a problem, which is up to you, its no real big deal. Though you do have your FSB set it 133, not 166, where it should be for that particular processor.

Go into your BIOs, and change your FSB to 166mhz, and your CPU should be running at 1833mhz, which is the offical 2500+ speed.

The 2600+ will work in your motherboard. Your KT333 has the 1/5 divider which allows it to run 166/333mhz FSB Athlons. The only reason why the offical specs doesn't state it, is because when the board/chipset was developed and released, no 166/333mhz FSB Athlons existed. Your 2500+ is indeed a 166/333FSB Athlon.

Your 2500+ is fine, the only slight problem is your CPU won't be properly recogonized by your BIOs.

As FFactory0x said, it could be a possiblity that your CPU is "Unknown CPU" because of the speed. Your speed problem could be fixed with raising your FSB to 166/333. When my CPU was @ 2.4ghz, it was also an "Unknown CPU" in 3dmark, though in Windows/posting, it was just an AthlonXP 2.4ghz. Though a 1466mhz Athlon is a 1700+ rating.

Hope this helps

hmm well i have a Q now... does this mean u can just go into the overclock section of ur mobo and just raise it to 166 as if u were overclocking it? hmm dont know why i never thought of that lol...
