I was wondering if someone here could give me a good web site that might explain some unixs basics? When it comes to how unix works, basic commands and familer terminology.

Also I was wondering if I kinda wanted to jump right into that kind of environment what would be a good start?

Thanks a million

You can try linux.com. Linux is a free unix-like operating system that you can install and start playing with right away. There is a link from the linux.com webpage to a linux documents project where many HOWTOs are documented in great detail. You will find yourself lost in all the documents that are available for linux.

Check out Here. It seems to link to a bunch of sites with everything from a history of UNIX to basic commands and links to a bunch of linux distros, BSD distros, etc.

What do you want to do with UNIX or do you just want to learn about it? If you can give me a little more info I might be able to find some more relevant links. 🙂

edit: If you explore that page a bit (go up to the root page) they have a cool listing of about 80 different UNIX flavors not including a ton of Linux distros (separate area).

<<You can try linux.com>>

IMO linux.org is much better. I learned a loned of stuff there when I first started using linux.

hmmm... consider asking this question on www.unix.com

as long as that bastard, small pricked, "RTFM," asshole, Neo, doesn't see your post, you'll get a bunch of really cool people who'll give you some excellent links...

actually there might be a FAQ on the site answering this very question.

now for my bias...

check out the FreeBSD handbook on www.freebsd.org.... it's EXCELLENT... written very nicely in a very easy to understand format that even I was able to understand. to top that off... freebsd-questions@freebsd.org is spectacular when it comes to questions and problems... the people, especially the gurus are really nice and really help you if you have questions.

thanks for all your help.

www.unix.com was very helpfull

Lead me to a program call UWIN which is a really good playground for unix. It allows you to emulate a unix environment on win2000,nt

Thanks
