UNIX-based OS'es for old old old Mac?

Does anyone know some good OS'es to use with a Mac Quadra 630? It has the 68040 ( I think, something like that ) CPU @ 33MHz. Nothing really special, just for UNIX/LINUX learning puposes. Any ideas?

netbsd should run fine on old mac hardware.

most newer mac linux distros are designed for powerpc hardware but i believe YellowDog linux (do a search on google, i have no link right now) supports mk86 arch which is for older macs. not too sure though.

u might look at buying an older PentiumPro or used Sparc system. theyd have more support than your old mac.

YellowDog does not support it.

You're kidding right? Forgot that! :disgust: I just want to put this Quadra to some use. ( instead of blowing it up ) If I wanted another IBM/comp, I'd make another Athlon system. 😛

I guess I'll download NetBSD.

debian would be a good choice if u want linux

<< Motorola 68k (``m68k'')

First officially released with Debian 2.0. The most established port after the Intel x86. The Debian m68k port runs on a wide variety of computers based on the Motorola 68k series of processors - in particular, the Sun3 range of workstations, the Apple Macintosh personal computers, and the Atari and Amiga personal computers.

from debian's own ports page 🙂

Debian if you have to, OpenBSD or NetBSD if you really want the best!

*nothing will be great on that hardware 😛

Think I'll stick with NetBSD. 😀 It's only to learn, and I've already used Debian, plus I'd like something made especially for the model I have. 😛

Think I could get anything besides MacOS to run on the regular Mac SE? 🙂 One was givin to me a few years ago when I was in high school and I'd love to see a unix prompt on the thing. 🙂

..~8" black and white screen........unix.........mmmmmmmm

what're the specs of your mac se? netbsd would probably run since it has very minimal requirements

Well, I finally tried to install NetBSD, but I'm having quite a few problems. 😛 First I have to put a larger HDD in it. Second, the Mac OS doesn't have the "apple HD SC Setup" files, so I can't get it to recognize the MS format CD. 😛 Considering this is the only Mac I own, and without a internet connection, this is going to be hard to install. I'm not sure that I want to even waste my time and money now. 🙁 Oh, jhu, it's a quadra 630, with a Motorola 68040 processor@33MHz. Just a little under being able to run Yellow Dog.

I have no idea. I've never truly played with it much. I'll look for some online specs soon (at work right now); I would check the actual machine but it's still at my parent's house and I won't be able get to that for another week or so.

Here's a link to the Macintosh m68k project.. wish they supported my Powerbook 190cs

Either that or NetBSD should work fine..

good luck..
