Unix Admins: How long did it take before you became really good?

I recently moved to a job where I work with a team who handles Unix administration for several servers and databases. I've learned quite a bit about Unix but I want to go a little deeper into the OS. Most of what I do right now is done through alias commands and while it saves time from typing out long commands it does'nt help me to learn as much. So with that in mind I'm thinking of taking up a class, but I really don't have the time or money to enroll into a bootcamp course.

Anyone here ever take a Unix class at a local college?
Was the class helpful or just a refresher of what you already knew?
How long did it take before you became comfortable with Unix?

As soon as I stopped shaving, showering, increased my Cheetos intake to three bags a day, and kept a 2L of Mountain Dew on me at all times, it went right through the roof.

You forgot the suspenders!

That explains why those ****ing cronjobs keep failing.

I've been a Windows/Linux admin for ~ 2 years and I'm moderately good at solving issues. You don't become a good admin until you start drinking, eating, sleeping, taking dumps of whatever you're admining. Uh............ yeah.

What kind of scheduling/job software do you guys use? We use autosys in our shop, some of the commands to run those jobs are monstrous. I'm just now starting to get the hang of running the alias commands on those, much less the full blown strings.
