For example, if you wanted help reformatting your laptop or troubleshooting a hardware issue, is there a place on campus that will help students for free?

yes, but they only do basic things and don't really have much troubleshooting abilities. The typical solution is to format the harddrive and reinstall the software.

What exactly is so complicated about reformatting a HDD? It's the same level of difficulty as gassing up a car.

? Who said it was complicated?

Edit: To the OP, yes, my university offers basic tech support, and would probably help you reformat.

Perhaps the fact that people need help with something he finds so easy makes him feel cool ??

Mine did. We were required to lease laptops through school so they had to. I don't think they supported any computers besides the leased ones though.

Mine offers basic tech support, such as virus/spyware removal, reformatting, diagnosing of hardware problems along with installing replacement hardware (but the end-user must purchase said hardware on their own).

The way it works at my school: If you're living in housing on my campus, you can put in a work-order and someone will come to your room to help you out. Otherwise, there is a place on campus to take your computer.

Actually, my university only has for-pay tech support. I work in a computer lab where we're only permitted to set up wireless on people's personal computers, apparently due to liability issues. I was just wondering if it's unusual that my university doesn't offer this kind of support for free.

Basic support and some hardware such as a network card which is rare nowadays. I used to work for them and I completed like 300 some tickets one semester, mostly spyware, lots of stupid computer users.
