I'm in my first year at York as some of you may / may not know. Anyway, I always was semi-aware of the grade point average drop that is seemingly customary for an undergraduate student. Only now when I am nearing the end of my first semester do I truly realize how much of a drop this can be, which is appropriate I suppose. I left high school with a 92.5% average, right now I think that I am looking at a high 70's GPA for the courses which are finishing this semester. It also must depend on the type of course you are taking and where, I guess.
The thing that really gets me is the grading. I know a few of my classes are marked extremely hard, where it is nearly impossible to get above say, 90. However the same class taught by another professor regularly sees 100% grades. Unfortunately I am not in any of these 100% classes. I just received an essay back today worth 30% of my grade, 74%, fine I can live with that, I'm not going to be a writer any time soon. The catch is that half of the essays are marked by the professor, the other half are corrected by some roly-poly English teacher who has nothing better to do. I saw 4 people with the same 89% mark, and another 4 with the same 74% as I had, the difference aside from the mark was who graded each paper. The prof did the 89% and the English waste did the lower ones.
Again I wouldn't really have a problem aside from the fact that my essay was 100% free of grammatical errors, as well as covering all of the content, he even wrote on many pages "good job". I'm going to dispute it tomorrow with the prof, hopefully he'll take a look. Wish me luck!
UPDATE - Sat down with the prof, he looked it over and was like "yeah I can really raise the grade". Then he went on to say that he wasn't sure if it was A material since he hadn't really sat down with it, so I asked him if he wanted to sit down with it. He said sure 😀 I'll let you know what I end up with.
