University - Damn UPDATE

I'm in my first year at York as some of you may / may not know. Anyway, I always was semi-aware of the grade point average drop that is seemingly customary for an undergraduate student. Only now when I am nearing the end of my first semester do I truly realize how much of a drop this can be, which is appropriate I suppose. I left high school with a 92.5% average, right now I think that I am looking at a high 70's GPA for the courses which are finishing this semester. It also must depend on the type of course you are taking and where, I guess.

The thing that really gets me is the grading. I know a few of my classes are marked extremely hard, where it is nearly impossible to get above say, 90. However the same class taught by another professor regularly sees 100% grades. Unfortunately I am not in any of these 100% classes. I just received an essay back today worth 30% of my grade, 74%, fine I can live with that, I'm not going to be a writer any time soon. The catch is that half of the essays are marked by the professor, the other half are corrected by some roly-poly English teacher who has nothing better to do. I saw 4 people with the same 89% mark, and another 4 with the same 74% as I had, the difference aside from the mark was who graded each paper. The prof did the 89% and the English waste did the lower ones.

Again I wouldn't really have a problem aside from the fact that my essay was 100% free of grammatical errors, as well as covering all of the content, he even wrote on many pages "good job". I'm going to dispute it tomorrow with the prof, hopefully he'll take a look. Wish me luck!

UPDATE - Sat down with the prof, he looked it over and was like "yeah I can really raise the grade". Then he went on to say that he wasn't sure if it was A material since he hadn't really sat down with it, so I asked him if he wanted to sit down with it. He said sure 😀 I'll let you know what I end up with.

Over 80% of HOPE scholar students at GA Tech lose their scholarship after their freshman year. Meaning, their GPA fell below 3.0.

I lost mine but unlike many others, I got it back 🙂

Nice - My university doesn't have annual scholarships, you can get an entrance one as I did (4K) but that's it.

I would not worry about if if I were you. My sister got into York with a 94% average. After 1 year she realized that: a)no one gives a crap about marks, b) no one cares about whether you are an 'honours' bachelor and c)no one cares whether you went to york or queen's.

So I say, enjoy it and don't worry about it at all. Hell, you're at York, just stare at the good looking chicks...

Do some networking and find out who the easier grading teachers are and take their classes. I know it sounds weird, but if you have scholorships riding on it then you might come out better off.

Indeed, it sounds like a good idea.

Yah I'm also starting to realize what you are saying Marty, it doesn't really matter as long as you pass.

York... Hahaha, every time I hear about that I remember what a friend of mine from Ontario (who goes to UofT, I believe) one told me: "When you graduate from high school in Toronto you either go on to university... or you go to York."

It cracks me up every time regardless of how good/bad a university York is.

My High school GPA was about 3 or so. Now I am a Jr in college (mechanical engineering) I have a 3.9 🙂. It is harder in college, though, that is why I do better.

What program are you in? Schulich?

Don't worry about University man. Just don't get discouraged.

I went from being one of the smartest in my high school to being one of the dumbest in my program at UofT (Comp Eng...same as MartyTheManiak). I don't care though, just enjoy what your doing and you'll be fine.

I had a 90% in highscool and barely got a 70% in my first year at University.

I'm not too worried about the year now, thanks guys, as long as I'm not dropping out / failing.

yea.. don't worry.. just feel fortunate that you didn't go to UofT.. your marks would be at least 10-15% lower.. no joke.. and York has all d honies... just work on getting laid and the marks will come..
You'll find that it gets much easier after first year..
a good friend of mine had a D average first year of UofT and mananged to raise his GPA after 5 years to above 3.5. he also got into meds.. so bottom line.. enjoy University while it lasts.. trust me.. it's much better than the "real world".

Oh man! I was going to make a post just like this one! I'm in first year and I'm dying. I have no time, and all I want to do is lie in bed all day. I might fail one or two classes, hopefully not. Hmm........ Ugh 🙁

Yeah I know what you mean. It's crunch time right now, in a very big way. I don't think I've gone to bed before 2am in a few months.

Christmas break is very much needed.

Ouch. Definitely take it up with the prof. At the very least you can say the comments are all positive so you're not sure what you need to work on to do better. If there's no constructive criticism then there's no reason it's not 100% correct.

I had a TA grade a Philosophy paper I wrote once and he didn't even give me a letter grade. It just had a note on it saying to write it again. Naturally I gave to to the prof. to see and iirc I got an A.

Nice, stupid TA's. I'm going at 12:30 to see the guy, hopefully I can catch him. I'll let you know what happens.

ossly enough, my GPA went from ~2.7 to a 3.5 when I went to college. Go figure.

what program did you go into ? What % would a 2.7 be ?

Percentages are what crappy schools in NY use. Everywhere else uses a 4.0 GPA scale. And since NY schools don't teach basic math, I will spell it out for you.

100/4=25
25*2.7=67.5

(I REALLY hate NY schools, I used to live on LI)

Your math is correct but ambiguous.

2.7/4.0 = 0.675 (percent)

0.675 * 100 = 67.5 (layman's terms of percent)

the 100/4=25 thing I couldn't figure out at first (probably due to the food coma I am in from 4 plates at the Crazy Buffet and 1 hour sleep last night).

🙂 It's friday though!
