University Blocks Online Gaming

Hello--

I just moved onto campus (Nebraska Wesleyan University) last week, and to my extremely acute pain, discovered that while internet browsing is allowed, online gaming certainly is not.

I'm not sure exactly what they've done to stop it, and as far as I can guess, it's that certain ports are blocked or that the ability for me to "ping" or send/receive information to those sorts of servers--although I imagine it's a combination of the two things, as the latter sort of blockage would also exclude internet access, I would think.

Anyways, regarding the inability to "ping" things, I can't open command.exe (in windows XP) and ping something--each attempt times out. Server browsing utilities, in and outside of games, do not work.

SO, I downloaded HTTP-Tunnel and SOCKSCap, and do everything I need to as far as I know (at least to the point where servers actually show up in in-game browsers, but I am unable to connect.)

Anyone have any ideas or workarounds?

Its their network, its their rules. If they say no gaming, then there is no gaming. If you feel you have a legitimate reason then you need to write a very nice letter and start sending it up the chain-of-command of your campus network admins.

If they all come back with the answer being "no," then you just need to accept it and find other things to do. The only alternative would be using something other than the campus network to gain access to the internet, such as a dial-up connection to a standard ISP.
