universal vs direct fit for a catalytic converter

I'm looking at catalytic converters for my vehicle (98 ram 1500 4WD v8 5.2) and Autozone lists two kinds..

Direct fit - $380
Universal fit - $130

What is the practical difference between the two?

Universal will definitely require adapters, flanges, etc., as well as some additional effort to get a secure and solid fit. Direct will be a fairly easy and solid connection, with no additional parts (usu. not even clamps) needed. Universal may also be more restrictive than Direct.
