they should allow you to download individual songs for $1 a piece

i don't think they can make money that way

hmm, their not making much money off of kazaa either

i think they'd lose more money with people buying just the one hit song off a CD rather than the whole CD

Like thw world really needs more one-hit wonders.

I don't think any of you are appreciating what a good move this is. Yes, CD's may still be somewhat expensive. But it is a good sign for the recording industry in general - They are using tried and true (and legal) free market methods to curb file swapping, instead of resorting to the unconstitutional, brutish, and consumer disenchanting method of SUING your customer base. This can only be a good thing, hopefully other record companies will follow suit.

As for getting money to the artists: Insane Clown Posse was on Howard Stern the other day. They are by no means a major band, and yet they do $16,000 in sales every day off of their website from merchandise, with probably none of that going to the record companies. That's almost $6 million a year, for a band that gets no exposure on MTV and gets voted as the Worst Band Ever by some magazine recently. Other bands need to follow this model. If I were in a major name band like Metallica or something, I'd cancel my record contract, sell my MP3's online for a buck a pop, and if I wanted to release CD's, just hire some company to press them for you.

I think a better solution would be letting consumers choose 3 songs off a album and pay $5 total. So it would be $1.70/song but at least you`ll be all legit and record companies can still make money. I know there are some holy banana bands that have only 1 hit song in an album, however most albums will have at least 2-3 good songs to choose from and own legally.

Excellent point. CD prices may not be taking much of a dive, but this move by one major record label will hopefully help to shape the future of CD pricing.

I agree that the recording industry would not be in the current mess if they had lowered prices years ago. I will now buy three CDs instead of two a month.

Let them produce better CD's then

i'll buy music cds when dvd-audio is more popular. then it will be worthwhile to buy it since you get surround sound music.

yea i know.. how would that make sense anyways lol🙂 would require collusion between all retail outlets.. which would mean boycott all retail stores for price fixing?! 🙂 10 dollars is the magic price though, atleast for me. at 10 i'm even willing to risk on a blind buy. at 15+ i rarely buy. mostly i buy cds when they first come out and were on sale in the first place, or in the top 10 and thus on sale. 10-12 is certainly the sweet spot.
