universal expansion dock

I have sony VAIO
I could get a sony port replicator VGPPRSZ1 or I can get universal exp dock which I can use it later even if I get new laptop
both cost about the same

any drawback to universal exp dock?

Um.... what the duece is a universal expansion dock? I can imagine a company selling one... but ultimately, the multitude of laptop designs is far too myriad to allow for a universal solution.

How much is either one that you have picked out? Do you truly need the dock? Does the dock give you anything that you could not get otherwise?

The drawback to a "universal" expansion dock is that they usually connect via USB, so you're limited to the bandwidth of the USB connection. This is a huge factor if you're going to be using the dock to feed a display. If you're just using it to connect to peripherals like a keyboard, mouse, USB hub, sound, etc., it won't be as big of an issue. So, it will depend on for what purpose you're using the dock.

Read some of the reviews from google seraches on the different brand universal dock stations. It seems like alot of people have issues with them and locking them up.

For the price they seem like a good deal but like was said earlier I wouldn't do it if you are going to use your laptop like a tower replace and that is the reason you need the dock.

Excellent points! In many ways, if you are going to use the UED, you might as well just add a powered USB hub. What exactly do you want to hang on your laptop? Does it have a Cardbus slot? A EX 34/54 slot? Theiy have better bandwidth than USB - especially the EX slot.
