You're right. I'm actually dealing with the reality of the situation, while you're dealing with the non-existent fantasy.

Reality is what we make of it. Our government could be exactly what I said, but too few voters care enough to demand it. Aside from that, though, I am 100% correct in what the federal government was intended to be. All one has to do is read the constitution to demonstrate that.

The better question is, why wouldn't we assume they would work together? Isn't it the case that a bunch of independent countries worked together to defeat the Axis during WW2? Well, why shouldn't we assume that the same thing would have happened if the 50 U.S. states were 50 independent countries?

50 independent countries as tightly connected geographically should by no means be assumed to have the necessary cooperation and expressed common interest to defeat the Axis powers. For someone so apparently fixated on the reality instead of fantasy, you sure do have some fantasies about cooperation and the assumption that this cooperation would be and come as natural as our cooperation with England, et al. was.

This same forced "cooperation" that stopped the evil Nazis in WW2 also got us involved in WW1, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, and any number of other fights that we arguably should not have been in. Our record there isn't very good.
