My brother just got to Tokyo a few hours ago and sent me this e-mail...

Read the article below. I just went right by this an hour ago in the express train I took from the airport to my hotel. Of course, I had no idea at the time why 20 spotlights were shining on the shore of a lake, and two ambulances were standing nearby with their lights on, while 30 people were doing something? By the way I am here safe and sound, though a little tired. Haven?t really slept since I got up Sat. morning at 4 am.

Tokyo Authorities Find Unexploded Bomb

TOKYO - Thousands of residents were evacuated in Tokyo on Sunday while authorities dug up an unexploded 550-pound bomb, believed to have been dropped by the United States during World War

The bomb, about 14 inches in diameter and 47 inches long, was detected earlier this month in a residential area in Tokyo's Katsushika ward by Self-Defense Force investigators, said Katsushika spokesman Takanori Kato.

About 3,900 residents within a 985-feet radius of the site were evacuated for 1.5 hours while troops removed the bomb, according to Kato.

The evacuation came after a diver found 59 unexploded shells in waters near Tokyo on Friday, believed to have been left by Japan's former Imperial Army.

The shells, about six inches by 20 inches, were found near a port just west of Tokyo during dredging work. It was not clear when the shells were placed there.

Unexploded bombs from U.S. attacks or arms hidden by the Japanese during the closing days of World War II in 1945 frequently turn up in Japan. Troops defuse the bombs and often dispose of them at sea.

Happens all the time. I was a Boy Scout when I lived in Berlin, and we found unexploded WWII bombs/grenades all the time on scouting trips in the woods. There was a simple proceedure of calling the Military Police to take care of it. No one got hurt.

When I lived near Bitburg we used to find gas masks, grenades, and bullets in the woods. 🙂

Had a coworker that ordinace disposal there for a few years in the 90s. That country is a real mess when it comes to landmines.

Hitler Youth? 😉

In France, people still die every year from unexploded ordnance from WWl. Not WWll, WWl.

Interesting . . . Shouldn't the countries who left their bombs and landmines on other people's property be responsible for removing them?

no.

Agreed.

And I bet within a few more posts, this will somehow be blamed on Bush.

No, maybe Japan shouldn't have attacked Pearl Harbor.

Yes, quite literally...but both Meguro and Nakano wards are more densely populated...topping off at around 20,000 people per square kilometer.

Clearly you are mistaken. It was Bush Sr., who was a Navy pilot in WWII

The original aggressor should take care of any left over ordinance, since it would not be there if not for their actions.

Wow, that sounds so cool. I wonder what they come up with next....

a 550 pound bomb? How much damage can that do?

When I first read it I was like "omg it's the third nuke!" but now im thinking maybe just an average sized bomb ways 550, and bigboy weighed a couple tons.
