I was told that my 80 hard drives have shipped out today! I have started preparations of the cases.
This will also mean I will have almost 800gb of hard drive space. I'm not sure what's going to be done with them; I assume some will be re-cycled into other computers, but I still estimate I'll have 50-60 drives, ranging in size from 3gb to 20gb, most 5200rpm or slower. If anyone is interested in any number of these for a cruncher, let me know, else I'll find a use for them!
Just a note - this is not a guarantee, all of this pending administrative approval, of course 😀.
As per administrative request, however, once the machines are ghosted, they will be shutdown nightly, and on the weekends, ending the biggest crunch times, however the faster hard drives should greatly improve performance and display less of a noticable performance decrease for users on the machines.
I'm going to try to get some pictures of the beauties up sometime this week.
For anyone who's clueless, or needs a reminder, I've included some details below:
Number of crunchers to be updated: 80
What's being upgraded: old 5200rpm hard drives (3.2gb, 10.2gb, and 20gb) to new 7200rpm 20gb drives.
Other system details:
AMD XP 2500+ @1.86 ghz
256mb RAM
Sharing T1 connection on 100mb LAN
Not to mention a plethora (sp?) of XP 2400+, as well as several XP 64 machines, and servers. All hopefully running before the end of august! I plot my return.
