ok, i bought a case from liteon enclosure its the tm203b (if you care to look http://www.loeusa.com/great case.. super case! its micro atx... but the power supply that came with it is only 250 watts..
on top of that it is neither atx or m-atx standard.. how nice.. it does work like an atx same pinout and such.. compatible with my p4 mobo....what am i gonna do?
so far its working.. even though every wattage calculator ive used suggests that i get at least a 350watt power supply
an atx supply would be too long and most likely too wide...
ps specs:
3.3v+ 14a
5v+ 25a
12v+ 13a
5v- 0.5a
12v- 0.8a
5vsb+ 3a <-- wtf?
it really is amazing that it works (for how long i dunno) considering...

3.0e presscott
gefore fx5200
2x512mb pc3200 ddr ram
sb live 5.1
wireless network card
52x cd-r
20gb hdd
40gb hdd
3x 60mm fans
lcd temp readout

Your link is busted; you need to use the [ L ] tags here, not standard HTML hyperlinks.

You have nowhere near 350W of stuff in your PC. I take it this is not a standard ATX case?

Your lin

+5VSB is the StandBy power. If you don't know this kind of stuff, maybe you shouldn't be screwing around inside your PC?

That's maybe 200W worth of hardware (maybe), and your PSU has a very good +12V rail for a "250W" PSU (this is common with, for instance, SFF PCs). I don't understand what your problem is?

im just concerned(i may want to upgrade later and im highly attached to this case).. and yes it is a micro atx case.. and yes my linking skills do suck
one site rated the proc at 96watts and the geforce at 65watts... i'll try and fix the link i didnt mention my 2x512mb of pc32000 ram

and i apoligize for being new, and also posting new topics

but i thought this may have been found interesting by some people
thx for the help, seriously (even if it was a bit caustic)

That sounds a bit high for a GeForce FX 5200... I mean, the real high-end ones only pull like 75-80W, and this card is only a fraction of the speed of those. I would be amazed (and really disappointed) if it used more than 50W of power at the very most.

But even if that's right, where's the other 200W of supposed usage coming from? The RAM would be a whole 20W or so, and *maybe* 30-40W total for your hard/optical drives, and then ~10-15W for the fans. Seriously, there's no way you're pulling anywhere near 350W with that system.

well heres the site... http://www.jscustompcs.com/power_supply/
although.. they do sell power supplies..
and this particular one is of the brand name "suncheer"
and as far as i can tell they dont even have a website..
which leads me to believe that its not of great quality....
not to mention my twelve volt rail reading in the bios equals 11.645 or so..
the rest are normal

I think they're overestimating quite a bit on that page. Especially on the hard/optical drives. Most hard drives pull very little power (maybe ~10W) except at bootup.

I wouldn't worry about the PSU; it's a custom unit, and the specs look fine. I must say I wouldn't buy a PC where I couldn't upgrade the PSU, but that's just me. I'm sure you could email Lite-On and find out more information about it if you really wanted to.

Software voltage monitoring is hideously inaccurate. Check with a multimeter if you want to have a clue what the actual voltage coming out of your PSU is. 11.645 is still well within the +-5% tolerance allowed by ATX anyway.

YOu should be fine. IIRC a 5700LE consumes a mere 25Watt. That 5200 probably consumes around 15-20.

Additionally yes the Prescott consumes a lot of power. However the figure is off. I would say about 70Watt at idle (Due to speed step) and about 125 at MAX load.

I wouldn't upgrade that PSU. If anything sell the prescott, in favor of an A64 or something.

Edit: For a 5700 running GDDR2 memory it consumes a mere 12.36Watt. Imagine how much less the 5200 is. Source is Xbit Labs review.
