Unions = Bad news

XZeroII

Lifer
My friend got a job and started last Monday. Yesterday I call him to see how it's working out and such.

Apparently he was fired yesterday.

Why?

There was an accident about 1 mile from where he worked. The road was closed. He still had 20 minutes to get to work, but with all the traffic being rerouted to roads that weren't setup for that kind of traffice, it took him awhile to get around. He punched in 3 minutes late. His supervisor apologized and couldn't do anything about it because of union rules.

🙁 He finally found a good job that pays well and that he was really good at. Not anymore.

yup, unions are a waste on the economy. The majority of union workers are way overpaid and unskilled.

what does he do

He was working at a large machining shop. His first day he had to slow down because he was already working too fast and too hard.

Okay, that's just fvcked up all around.

I agree with SampSon, appeal it. Pretty much textbook definition of circumstances beyond his control.

Something is missing here. Unions rules are not set up to fire workers for bing 3 minutes late. Don't blame this on the union, and don't lump all unions in the same group either.

Anyways...let the union bashing begin.

Yea, something is missing here, but its true. A lot of unions are getting corrupt. As with a lot of things, they work well in small to medium levels, but once they get big, there is just inefficiency everywhere.

His interpretation of what happened, Rules are Rules. They make no exceptions. I already told him that it was out of his control, but he seemed very depressed about it and I think very discouraged about going back.

"Rules are Rules. They make no exceptions..."

That goes both ways, usually to the union worker's advantage, no matter how poorly they perform, which can be subjective. But, punching in late during your probation period, is pretty black & white.

Unions are GREAT! Why do you think foreign auto manufacturers have been choosing the south to build their plants? UNION LABOR! I work 2 minutes from the BMW manufacturing facility. Not in Detroit, but in South Carolina.

Unions: Chasing away overseas investment for decades..... 🙂

This is what I am talking about. You can't lump all unions into the same group.

These auto makers may choose to use non union labor to man the plants. However, they are built with union labor...well mostly union labor. scabs:thumbsdown:

its because the unions are dead that the americans are loosing their jobs to overseas and loosing thier jobs to illegal workers.

I'm not quite sure what you are talking about... My company aided in the construction of BMW's assembly line. We by no means are union. We fire people who try to tell management what to do. If I remember correctly, the lead contracting firm was out of Atlanta, and I don't believe that it was union affiliated either. I heard the former president of BMW, (His name was Helmet something...) talk about how non-unionized labor was a major asset for the southern states.

The best part is this whole thread is going to turn into a union bashing thread, then morph into a outsourcing argument, then degrade into either class bashing or just straight up name calling.

what do you mean by "unions are dead"? it is partly because of unions that jobs are outsourced internationally.

I was refering to most Honda and Toyota plants.

We fire people who try to tell management what to do.

What does this have to do with unions?

Yes, some guy named Helmet from Germany is an expert on labor cost and issues in the Southern United States...

Do you believe everything someone tells you...?

ehh what the hell?

that's sarcasm right?

it's because of the unions that people rather hire immigrants and outsource to other countries where people will work for less and do a better job.

a lot of the damn blue collars just complain to unions and such..

the president/governor that bans unions will get my 100% support.

what do you mean 'getting corrupt'? hell, the unions are probably less corrupt now than they were in the 60s

The piece that is missing is that this "rule" was agreed upon during contract negotiations. Most likely it was demanded by Corporate Management because it would be their one and only way to fire someone (noone gets fired from a union job for poor performance). Blame it on Corporate for mandating it, or blame it on the Union for accepting it during negotiations. It doesn't matter, unions still suck.
