I want to get an APC BackUPS Pro 500. It is rated for 300-315 watts. It will be powering a desktop PC with a 21" monitor. The computer will have an Enermax 350 watt power supply. Will the BackUPS 500 be enough? I think that it would work fine with more equipment connected to it than it is rated. It would just run for a shorter period right? Or do I need to get a higher rated UPS?

Howdy,

APC has a "selector" on their site for determining the correct model. Here it is

Hope that it proves useful.

Cheers,

I have the APC Back-UPS Pro USB 500 model (the sexy curvy beast) and it worked beautifully on an older rig, but I have the same question you have, cuz I'm gonna get an Enermax 365W PS in my next rig. I might have to get a Smart UPS 1000 or something crazy like that.

To answer the question about overdoing the UPS, I'm currently using a comp with an Athlon 850, 19" monitor, etc., and it's plugged into a Back-UPS Office 280. So far, no problems.

Maybe the VA/Watt rating is for the battery only, in which case you could plug in the rest of your rig in the surge-only outlets.

Wish I could help more, but the best bet is to get over and beyond what your demands are.

I have a cyber power 500 and a 17 inch monitor. I am running a T-Bird 1 GHz @ 1.42 GHz. using a enermax 351 watt wisper PS and a lot of other garbage (DVD - 60GXP etc.). Let me unplug this baby and see what happens.

If I come back, it worked ;)

It worked ;) I also had a hub/router/cable modem on the battery part. I watched my voltage, and power did not even drop .01 V to ANY of my rails. Nice.

Im not sure the diff in power from my 17" to your 19" or 21", but it is an older 17" that probably sucks more power than new monitors. It should work ;)
