uninsured motorist in california question

I know someone who forgot to renew their insurance, and got in an accident (in California). Therefore he was an uninsured motorist. He rear ended someone. What legal rammifications may occur and what is my friend liable for?

he's pretty screwed, has to pay all the liable damages. hoepfully it was a light rearender, and not a big one, otherwise if the person claims medical.....

The fine for driving w/o insurance is about $1000. He's also resposible to pay for al lthe damage to the car he hit.

I did some research on California laws, and it seems he is liable for:
$5k max on property damage
$15 max per person on personal/medical ($30k max on this irregardless of how many people were in the car).
That makes it $5k + $30k = $35k because there were 2 people in the car. He also gets his driver's license revoked for a year.

Are you sure those just aren't the minimum liability requirements? It doesn't mean that the victims cannot sue for additional damages--That's why you want to buy more than the required minimum.
