Let's see.......a few more bucks a year for uninsured motorist coverage, versus trying to get your vehicle replaced by suing someone who has no insurance and no money??

Yeah, I got it.

For sure. A friend of mine was hit by an illegal alien, and it was hell for her to be reimbursed. Way worth the negligible extra cost, IMO.

Question: I just reviewed my PEMCO policy and found "underinsured motorist" coverage.
Is this the same as uninsured motorist?
Thanks

Yes, it is required in NY. Seems like a good idea to have anyway. I think it's only $10-15 for 6 months.

One thing that I don't understand is NY requires Personal Injury Protection (PIP). I already have health insurance. It is a fair amount of the total premium even at low coverage.

Yes. Have cash, get insurance. The car is being insured, not the driver*. However, car insurance doesn't seem to be high on the list of purchases made by illegals w/o licenses.

Yes, the driver's record or lack thereof affects the price.

PIP is called medical payments coverage in some states. If you or your passenger are injured in an accident your PIP kicks in and reimburses you for any medical payout up to your limit. It's certainly good if you have a high co-pay or an annual deductible that you are required to pay before regular health coverage kicks in or in the worst case if you don't have health insurance.
