Uninstalling Windows 2000

Recently, I had a problem with my Windows 2000 installation. One of my system files was corrupted, and despite mine and my techie friends' best efforts, we were unable to get Win2k running again.
Thankfully, my university offers free software for CS majors, so I picked up a copy of Windows XP Pro. I installed it on my system on the same drive as my Windows 2000 installation. I know that formatting is generally the best way to install a new OS, but at the time I absolutely could not format due to having extremely important files there not backed up.
I'm going to be keeping XP and all the files on my HD except Windows 2k. What is the best way to uninstall Win2k without losing any information that might be in one of my Win2k specific folders?

Thanks for your time.

If you installed XP to the Win2K partition, 2K is gone as far as your system is concerned. There may be some files left over here and there, but there's no uninstall routine that will detect and remove them.

I still have my WINNT ( windows 2000) directory.
As far as my machine knows, I am dual booting XP and 2k

Did you install XP on a different partition? If so simple. Drag and drop what you want to keep. If not 2000 should have been overwritten.

Do you select which OS to boot into at the beginning? If so are they really different OS's?

XP is on the same drive as 2000.
There is a screen where I choose which OS to boot

That's because you didnt install over the old win2k installation, Win2k by default makes a WINNT folder while Win XP makes a WINDOWS folder.

When you installed XP you should have specified to use the WINNT folder. :|

So basicaly you are now Dual booting between Win2k & XP.

You can edit the boot.ini file to remove the win2k boot option & delete the WINNT folder if you want to completely remove win2k from your hd.
