You could always use detonator destroyer as well. You should not have to reformat simply because you are going from a nVidia card to an ATI.

adding to what john said after using detonator destroyer reboot

then set the display adapter to standard vga adapter

reboot

then install the ati drivers and you should have no problems😉

99% of the time you won't need to reformat at all if you're careful.

After using add/remove programs and restarting the computer, search the registry for "nVidia" and "GeForce" and delete any entries you find. Then search your system partition for any files containing "nv" and delete all of the ones with nVidia copyright notices on them (be careful as there are some Microsoft files starting with "nv" too). You can safely avoid any files inside the Windows driver cache (in fact you can't delete those even if you tried).

I've successfully switched from ATi to nVidia and back again many times as I often swap my Ti4600 with a Radeon for testing purposes and then swap back when finished. This technique has never failed me.

I recently upgraded from Nvidia gf2 to Radeon 8500.

After 'Add/Remove', there were 4 Nvidia registry listings left.

RegCleaner will find and remove them painlessly, or just search and remove with registry search feature.

Hope this helps!
