Like n0c said, but if you've got LILO installed, you might want to do a "lilo -u" first to remove it from the boot record. I'm sure GRUB has a similar command, but I have no experience with it.
You may also find doing a "fdisk /mbr" from a boot disk to be helpful for removing lilo-- but be careful, i don't think 'fdisk /mbr' takes any other parameters, it just resets it on the first IDE-0.
