Uninstalling Drivers in Safe Mode

Hi all,
Is it possible to remove drivers in safe mode?

My problem:
Out of the blue my computer stopped responding. When I restarted it would get to the windows login screen. When I clicked on an account to login the login options dissappear and nothing further happens.

System had no issues prior to this, no hardware has changed in at least a month.

I can boot into safe mode (which is how I'm posting now) but attempting to remove drivers results in 'the windows installer is not available in safe mode'

What I've tried with NO overclocks:
-Power down/reboot - Freeze when clicking on Acount to login, can still move mouse.

-Boot using last known good config - Freeze after clicking on account to login, mouse still works

-Boot using low resolution mode- Freezes on black screen after windows load bar, mouse still works

-Safe mode - Use system restore to return to restore point 1 days ago - freeze after clicking on login, mouse still active

-Safe mode - Use system restore to return to restore point 3 days ago - same as above

-All the above after restoring CPU to stock speed - No glory. (Was overclocked @ 3.2ghz previously)

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

My System:
MBoard:ASUS P5K Deluxe - BIOS 0404
CPU: Core 2 6750 @ stock while troubleshooting
RAM: 4GB ocz Platinum DDR 800 (stock settings)
Sound: Asus Xonar d2 (don't remember driver version)
PSU: Seasonic M12 500W
Graphics: Radeon HD4870 Stock everything - Catalyst 8.7
HDD: 2x Seagate 250GB barracuda

I've reset my CMOS and I can now get into Windows. However I can't do anything as it the cursor shows as busy.

After using enabling Bootlogging, ntbtlog.txt I came accross the following message which repeats a couple of hundred times. Anyone have any idea?

Well that install is hosed, you're not going to be able to boot without a functional ACPI driver. Whether it's overclocking related or not is hard to say (though Memtest may not be a bad idea) but in either case you need to reinstall.

After a fresh install things are back to normal.
I had previously run mem test for 16 hrs prior and got no errors.

I wonder if DRM had a role ... I installed Spore (which I think uses secuRom) a day or so before trouble started.

It's entirely possible, it wouldn't be the first time that SecuROM caused problems.
