I just installed directx 8.1 hoping that it would increase my box's performance. Big mistake. Everything is choppy as hell and not kosher. My 3dmark2k1 dropped from 6840 to 3000! i've been trying to install 8.0 back onto my system, but the computer won't let me. Help me please! There's nothing in the control panel or the direct x diagnostic panel.
 
Your story is the same as many here . . . doesn't seem to be a really good solution other than a rebuild. DX8.X Woes
