unicode and non-unicode programs, what's the difference?

I have windows xp professional. I have trouble reading Korean in applications, and I learned that in the Regions and Languages setting, under advance, there is a selection for "Languages for non-unicode programs". If I set this option to Korean, instead of English, I can view Korean in all applications correctly.

However, I do not understand what unicode and non-unicode is, and want to make sure if it is ok to have this setting set to Korean, and whether it will effect any other programs that does not contain any korean.

Thank you!
