Unhappy w/ new lazer mouse jitters

So I got a new laser mouse a couple weeks ago.

I had been extremely happy with my A4tech X-718 Optical mouse, and I was fairly bummed that after 2+ years of use, the main mouse button started registering multiple clicks instead of one.

I was pleasantly surprised to find a newer model of the X-7 (XL-750F) with laser instead of optical, but it seems the "better resolution" has trouble tracking on my vinyl desk mat similar to this one. Instead of tracking smoothly, the mouse tends to jitter all over the place, a couple millimeters at a time. It goes away if I put in on a blank paper or something, but my desk top is glass, so that doesn't work at all.

Does anyone have recommendations for a nice, cheap, solid colored desk mat or large mouse pad? I've taken a look at this one, but I don't really like the fact that it's "foam backed".

Being a glass top desk i'd tape a picture or mat under the glass surface. All you need is something for the camera in the mouse to see threw on the otehr side of the glass. Then you desk isn't cluttered by a mat.

Nothing a plain piece of paper won't cure. What happens with glass-like surfaces is that spurious reflections bounce back and confuse a laser optical mouse. The solution is an opaque , non-shiny surface. Under the glass or plastic may not resolve the issue - the reflections will still be there. Just stick something like this on top of your shiny mat:

Mat

Shiny is bad - dull is good. :)
