About 2 days ago I was using my laptop for some schoolwork. I turned it off and a couple of hours when I tried to turn it back on I got a blue screen of death and then it died. Since then it sometimes turns on, sometimes doesn't but whenever it does boot up the video picture is all screwy like the GPU is artifacting hardcore. It has gone through 4 years of hard use.

Should I send it to dell for an analysis or should I just get a new machine?

The reason I ask about the new machine is I have a new desktop that was built last summer (see sig) which I do the majority of my schoolwork on. If I did get a new notebook/netbook it would be to take the occasional notes and take care of group work for my classes. I predominately use Word, Excel, and Project, but will be using Navisworks and AutoCAD, probably on my desktop.

What netbook/notebook could I get for a good price that will last me long enough to get through my last year of school? Key points would be battery life and screen res, speed and power are not a large factor. Budget is <$400 but if the features warranted I could go higher.

It would help more if you could tell us what make/model of laptop you have now for reference and comparison.
