I just had the scariest experience I can remember ever having, yet it doesn't make any sense to me. I am literally in tears still, 30 minutes later, as I am typing this, and I don't understand why.

First of all, some basic info about tonight. I stayed up until about 3:30 am, which is pretty normal for me. Before bed, I watched 2 movies- Garden State, and Reign Over Me, in that order. Neither movie was horror or scary in any particular way. I live with my mother and younger brother, though I am 29. Tonight it has been storming outside, when I was getting ready for bed I noticed that the wind was blowing really hard and it sounded like if it was a little bit harder it could break a window.

After Reign Over Me, I went upstairs to my bedroom, noticed my PC was off. I always keep it on, but I realized it overheated while running memtest- a problem I have noticed in the past. I removed the memtest CD and let the computer boot into vista. Earlier this evening I was messing around with some custom settings in vista, of note I changed the power settings to run the cpu at 5% to 90% power (default was 100% min and max), and also enabled some advanced performance setting on my hard drive that sounded like a write cache (it was warning me that if the drive lost power with this setting enabled I could lose data). Anyway, it booted into vista fine. I read a few threads before bed, looked at some pr0n, and then started downloads for both the 64bit and 32bit versions of vista sp1. I already have sp1 installed from one of the "earlier releases", but I wanted to get a fresh copy of each to save incase of a fresh install. With both downloads going, I started playing garbage's CD 2.0 in .wma format on winamp, and went to sleep listening to it. I can remember hearing the second track and that is about it, so I must have fallen asleep pretty fast.

I have no memory of any dreams. I just remember waking up to my mom screaming. I don't even know what her words were. I woke up, and the music was still playing. My room was dark but instead of turning on the light I stumbled across the bed to the computer. Actually I tried to turn off my alarm clock first, having just woken up I was very confused and my mom's screaming made me nervous. I yelled back something like "whats wrong", but I could barely yell and my voice sounded very odd. She yelled back something about turn off the music. Anyway, after a moments confuse I realized it was my computer still playing the garbage CD, I moved the mouse to get it out of screen saver mode but nothing happened. At this point my mom is still yelling at me, the music is still going, so I don't bother investigating further and I just hold the power button in long enough to force a power-off. At this point I look at the clock, see it's 4:30am, and realize it wasn't anything unusual- just the last track of the CD I started an hour previous. Yet I was terrified. It took me 20 minutes to get up the courage to turn my computer back on to start writing this, in the hopes that putting this all into text would get me over it.

I don't get it. Nothing about what I went through should make me feel like this, yet here I am. I theorize that maybe I was having some kind of nightmare and my mom's screaming made it more real to me, but I have no memory of any dreams. When I first woke up I thought it was the house burning down or some horrible accident. When I couldn't simply turn off the music on my computer, it only added to my fright. Having written this, I am feeling a bit better, but I still don't feel like I can go back to sleep. As far as the computer not responding, I figured it had to be from the power setting changes I made, so I changed it back to 100%/100% for now until I can do further testing.

cliffs- I was awakened to mother screaming. For some reason this terrified me, and was made further worse because I had music playing on my computer that I couldn't use to turn it off properly. My theory is I was having some horrible nightmare and my mom's screaming interrupted the worst part of it, but I have no memory of any dreams.

Sorry if it doesn't make sense or it's not super entertaining. I just had to write it out to get over it. I am starting to feel better now though.

Sounds like a classic example of a panic attack. If you don't have any other emotional problems like depression and or anxiety and nothing of this sort develops in the next few days then I wouldn't worry about it too much most people have several in their lives at some point and you don't need to have a good explanation for why either. If you do have problems with anxiety and depression I would recommend going to a doctor/therapist for help !! Take this from someone who has had problems with anxiety and depression most of his life. If it persists and or worsens go get help, there is good medication for depression and anxiety!!

Sorry for giving you a hard time but that post was one confusing read ... I agree with Locut0s in that I think you had a panic attack which may have been caused by waking up to your mom screaming. (btw what was she screaming about?)

Anyway I'm glad you're feeling better ... now just try to relax & go back to sleep! :)

I read the wikipedia article on panic attacks and it sounds like exactly what I had.

A panic attack is a response of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS). The most common symptoms may include trembling, dyspnea (shortness of breath), heart palpitations, chest pain (or chest tightness), sweating, nausea, dizziness (or slight vertigo), light-headedness, hyperventilation, paresthesias (tingling sensations), sensations of choking or smothering or derealization, or the feeling that nothing is real. These physical symptoms are interpreted with alarm in people prone to panic attacks. This results in increased anxiety, and forms a positive feedback loop.[4]

Trembling, chest tightness, dizziness, and the feeling that nothing is real. For a moment right after it occurred just after I shut off my computer I was literally thinking maybe I died in my sleep and this is some sort of hell or purgatory. I hope I never have one again.

Depression runs in my family. When I was about 12 I was diagnosed with something "close to" depression, and they gave me zoloft, but I only took it for a few months. I was getting along just fine after that, well until this happened.

She was screaming for me to turn off the music. It wasn't really that load but I guess she had trouble sleeping and couldn't get back to sleep while she could hear it from across the hall. I guess she was screaming because I was asleep pretty deep and she probably started calling out in a more normal voice, but I just slept through it- so she yelled louder until I actually woke up.

That sounds pretty horrible.

Have you ever been asleep, and been startled awake only to realize you couldn't move AT ALL? Even breathing seems impossible. You try to make a noise with all your willpower, but you cannot even whimper. Your breath runs short. You gasp for air but cannot even open your mouth to let it in.

The minutes pass by as you lie there in the dark motionless, a captive in your own body, when suddenly you begin to feel an impending sense of sheer terror. You feel as though you are being slowly smothered by the hand of some dark malevolent force, and they are deriving extreme pleasure in watching you slowly die.

Your air runs out, you think of your life and weep bitterly it is now coming to a slow and painfully violent end. You prepare yourself as best you can for what now seems certain-- for what lies on the other side of death. Your last thought is of how someone you love will find your cold and lifeless body in the morning, and of the infinite sadness in knowing you will never see them or anyone else you cherish ever again.

And then suddenly you awake... and can move! And can breathe! But never again can you sleep entirely in peace, for fear of return of the evil, suffocating force once again.

I have had that in the past too, but I was always able to breath. Instead the fear was that I would be stuck half asleep like that unable to move forever.

It hasn't happened in a long time for me, I can't remember it happening at all in the last 10 years at least.

Ah, normal to have a bad trip waking up then. Sort of like the old adage you should never wake up a sleep walker. Reason being they can wake up and be extremely agitated and disoriented, and even violent. You were in a deep sleep, moms yelling got louder and louder to wake you, and it had the same effect. Completely normal reaction, I think. Don't worry about it. :moon:

I have heard of scientific and spiritual explanations of why this happens. It is an interesting subject.

Just caught in the semi conscious state betwen dreaming and consiousness is all it is. Sort of like sleepwalking and having no control of your body and not being able to wake from it while in that state. Yet when you wake up, you might remember the experience later and the lack of conscious control at the time.

Yeah that's what I've heard. But I've heard stories where people see things and hear things when it happens. That along with the feeling of dread (not necessarily from not being able to move either) makes it seem a little weird.

It's called sleep paralysis ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleep_paralysis ), I have it. Happens to a lot of people. The hallucinations are dreams interacting with reality. I've seen all kinds of things when in a state of paralysis. Aliens, monsters, people, sounds, even a Subaru salesmen in my bedroom trying to sell me a Subaru (not kidding). They seem VERY VERY real because you're awake, but you see and hear strange things. Most of them are very scary, some are strange, even some funny. You blink your eyes, and then they're gone and you can move again.

One of the most common instances (this is one I get the most) you get is you don't see anything, but you will feel a hand grab your shoulder and you will hear someone wisper in your ear. It feels SOOO real. I mean incredibly real. Usually the words are just unintelligible gibberish (like backwards talk or Arabic). But you can even FEEL the breathe of the person on your ear when they speak. That's how real it feels. VERY scary.

ALso, most people who claim to have been visited by aliens (I think I read like 90%) say they were paralyzed during the experience, which leads one to believe they had sleep paralysis. The other 10% are probably just lying or smoked a bad rock.

I've gotten that before. I haven't had hallucinations but I've been unable to move and it felt like I was in the presence of something evil, like the devil was standing next to my bed or something. It was always with my eyes closed, and as much as I wanted to open them and give the devil (or whatever I thought was in my room) the middle finger, I was unable to move or do anything. Usually didn't last very long and I drifted back to sleep.

i agree here if im jolted out of a deep sleep like it seems you were im the same way, cant even remember my name sometimes

sleep paralysis is fun, its happened to me a few times, if you are aware of it and knwo what it is, its ieas to stay calm and just either wake up or go back to sleep

Meh, I did that 11 years ago, I am just back temporarily to sort a few things out and get debt under control. Even then I'm paying $600/month. Credit cards will be fully paid off in a couple months and I'll be moving along. Living with my mom has it's drawbacks but it beats the crappy roommate situation I was in and until I get things sorted out I can't really afford my own place.

I was able to get back to sleep around 6:30am, some 4 hours of sleep. Better than no sleep at all. I slept a little later than normal because in my confusion last night I turned off my normal alarm.
