Graphics card problem perhaps?

Assuming you are using a graphics card (and not onboard video), try removing the card and blowing the dust out of the fins and /or use a paint brush to clean them. Also make sure the card's fan is working. Most graphic cards come with software that measures the temperature of the card - try leaving the temp display window open to watch your GPU temps.

good luck!

The most simple answer is generally the right one.

Clean out and reinstall the drivers.

A list of your system compnents may help to rule out other possible issues.

my video card is onboard so i'll try reinstalling the drivers. if that doesn't work, i may try putting in an alternate video card.
also for a point of information, i've had this PC for about a year now and it only started acting up like this a few weeks ago. thanks again for the feedback.

If it was onboard video, it could have been bad memory causing it. If you continue having issues, or if the problem changes, be sure to check your memory.
