Hi

I had this:
Asus P4P800 Deluxe
P4 2.8 Northwood
Antech something .. don't remember
ATI X800 Pro

And now I have this:
Thermaltake Purepower 420W
Asus P5GD2 Deluxe
ATI X850 XT PE
P4 3.4GHz LGA775

I have the same HDs, cd-rom drive and case.

What my PC do:
It work perfectly except when I try to play games like Republic commando or doom3.
After 5 to 10 minutes, it shutdown. When I mean shutdown it close completly and I have to switch OFF and ON the PSU in order to reboot. Sometime it may take 30 seconds before it want to reboot.

PSU problem?

Additional info:
I'm still trying multiple settings, now my vid card is alone on its power supply rail. My cd-rom drive is unpluged and I use my HDDs in the standar IDE port on my mobo. (I was thinking it was some sort of memory error with those raid port that I have on my board)
My CPU Temp show me 52 celcius idle and if I check right after an unexpected shutdown, the temp show me 54celcius. Oh and fresh windows install with about nothing installed and it kept to shutdown.

Anyways, I will continue on my "Is it my PSU?" trail and I will post some more info about voltages and etc. But if guys have any ideas or questions, go ahead!

Thx for help!

"Wimpy 12V rail on that PSU" is what springs to mind. What are they, 18 amps I think?

If it were me, I'd grab an Enermax or Fortron 24-pin unit. Enermax has a 460W unit with 33A on the 12V rail, now THAT is a 12V rail for ya :D

Ok, I will try!

But what if I find my 20pin antech and see how many amp it have. If it have more, is it a good idea to use it?

(Because my 24 pin PSU is in fact a 20 pin one with the 2.0 spec. So they give a 20 to 24 pin adaptor with the 4 to 8 pin adaptor. Now they write PCI-express Ready on the box, what a hack)

Here my voltages specs, we always don't know: (from the BIOS reading)

Vcore = 1.392 --> waving sometimes to 1.384
3.3V = 3.360 --> STABLE
5V = 5.145 --> waving sometimes to 5.171
12V = 11.985 --> STABLE

Quick question; is it normal for Vcore and 5V to not be stable like the 2 others?

For a 3.4GHz Pentium4 with a top-end video card, it might be best not to try the Antec unless its total power rating is suited to this load, like 350W minimum, 400W+ preferred. If you do try it, you could use the 24-pin adapter.

I don't think the small changes in voltage are a sign of trouble by themselves.

Thx for all the infos!

I'm looking for a Enermax PSU over the net.. a 480W one (Dual pci-express ready)

In specs sheet I can see two +12V, one with 18 Amp max load and the other 15 Amp max load. When you mean 33 Amp, it's these 2 rails together?

It's not that I want this PSU, but when I will buy one, I wanna know what looking for... >8)

The "official" ATX 2.0 units will have two 12-volt rails like that 480W Enermax. The one I was thinking of actually has a single 12V rail but a very high amperage rating. Some people say single-rail is better. My #1 priority would be to get a strong high-quality unit that is natively 24-pin, and not worry too much about whether single or dual rails are better as long as it has plenty of 12-volt amperage. :)

I'll probably change my PSU at the end of the week, I will let you know if it fix the problem.

I could have some other question later about RAID port IDE etc.

Anyways, cya!

Ok, I found a free one >8)

An Antec Trupower 550 with the 24pin for my mobo. But this PSU don't have any 6-pin connector for my pci-express video card. I have a molex to 6-pin adapter but I'm not sure if it could work.

I think I need 2 * +12 Volts (yellow cable) and 3 * Ground (black cable) like this one :
6-pin specs

But my cable only have 1 * +12 Volts (yellow cable) and 2 * Ground (black cable)

Is it ok to run my PC like that? or I really need a good 6-pin adapter?

Aditional info about my 6-pin adapter.

I had an adaptor with a double yellow cable with my last PSU (the thermaltake one) but I lost it since I return that PSU to get my money back.

The one I have now (single yellow cable) came with my ATI X850 XT PE video card. But I won this card at my job after our project was finished. (we gave away our test cards after we finish the game) but I can't ask the team anymore if this adapter is the correct one since the team has been dissolved.. >8(

Now the PC boot and seem to work OK even with this single yellow cable pluged in my vid card. But I don't feel safe to fire up Doom3... I want to be sure that my vid card will have all the power needed when a big application will run.

Thx for your help! >8)

Look at what I found on ATI's web site:

ATI's web site (scroll down)

RADEON® X850 - Low Power Consumption
HardOCP.com
?However, the power cable is a testament to how power friendly this video card actually is. As you can see, this card does use the 6 pin PCI-Express power cable, but it only requires one Molex cable to be plugged in. This in comparison to a GeForce 6800Ultra PCI-Express video card, which requires two Molex cables to be plugged into the 6 pin PCI-Express power cable. The total wattage required by the card under a full load should fall short of 90 watts.?

If I'm right, 3 yellow cable give 288 watts, so 96 watts/yellow cable. They said it should not ask for more than 90 watts... I guess I'm ok with my single yellow cable .. >8)

I made my deductions with that web site ... and since I know nothing about all this... I will wait someone to confirm it hehehe

I swear by Antec True Power PSUs. It's the only thing I buy for my clients and myself now. Modern mobs are VERY fussy about voltage stability, and cheap PSUs have lousy voltage regulation.

I think you are ok with your adapter, especially since ATI themselves provided it :) It's good to hear that your computer is working now, enjoy!
