Sorry, my hand and brain aren't connected today... but yeah basically I meant that mobile messaging isn't killing data limits. Whatsapp hardly uses much data. If people are heavily using picture messaging, then I'm betting they're wasting more bandwidth posting on Instagram and browsing Instagram. No they don't, because they don't count toward data plans.
Video messaging via IP-based 3rd party plans can eat into data plans significantly, esp. if you have a smaller plan. eg. 200 MB per month is still a common amount.
I said before that if I were in a region where I'd have to roam, I'd use iMessage. That would be over WiFi. However, if I went for an extended period, then I'd get a new SIM.
I'm pretty sure video messaging is hardly used. The point of Whatsapp is to replace SMS/MMS and offer a better way for group communication while offering additoinal features like video and location sharing. The bulk of the communication is still like SMS/MMS where it's all or mostly text.
My point against integrated systems is that you can continue your Whatsapp/Line chats anywhere around the world. With SMS/MMS you're limited in region. iMessage might be able to take you a step forward, but it's not straightforward. What if it defaults to SMS between my mom and me because she doesn't have a smartphone? What do I do when I get overseas? Or frequently I see US iPhone users travel abroad and swap out for another phone that's unlocked because their iPhones are SIM locked (mostly ATT users). Then what? Whatsapp and Line don't have this issue and you can not worry about these quirks about when the system is supposed to manage it all but gets in your way of power usage. Better to get people onto an independent system that's not dependent on your OS or your network or whatever.
