First of all, Speedway gas stations have a customer for life. 🙂
Here's the deal: about a month ago, I went to a Speedway gas station late at night during work (I'm a U of M Public Safety employee - I do vehicle patrols of campus) and got a fountain drink. Speedway fountain drinks are $0.69 all summer for any size (40 oz. for me!). The next day, I read in the paper that a guy walked into that same Speedway 30 minutes after I was there with a 10-inch knife and robbed the place.
Since that day, I've been back to that Speedway three times, and each time I get a fountain drink, they give it to me for free! I'm pretty sure that it's because I'm a law enforcement officer, even though I'm not really an officer and have basically no power to stop a robber. If a robbery occurred, I'd press the emergency button on my radio and hide in the corner with everyone else. Anyway, I walk up to the counter each time with my money out, expecting that THIS particular attendant will make me pay, but each time they just tell me "You're all set! Have a nice day!" I don't want to abuse the benefit though, so even though I work at night twice a week, I make it a point to only go there once a week.
Obviously, it's a newly implemented store policy to keep police and public safety people around the station in case anything else happens. But, it's working - I go there at least once a week, and spend at least five minutes reading magazines and stuff.
Even though all I have is a radio (no gun, no badge, no pepper spray and no bulletproof vest), I think that my marked public safety car out front is probably a deterrent, so I'm happy to help.
The free 40 oz. of pop per week isn't bad either.
