When i hit the brakes in my car lightly they make a very noticable clicking sound and the car seems to slow down and the let off as the wheels go around.

It's kind of hard to explain but my best guess is that it could be the brake rotors? Does that sounds right? If so what's the best place to buy new ones, probabily with new brake pads, and get them installed? 01 Mazda Protege ES with 4 wheel disc breaks.

Also what would cause something like this?

Warped rotors.

As far as where to get them done...find a local mechanic you can trust. Ask around. :)

I've got a friend who's installed brakes on peoples cars before says he's never done rear disc brakes though, I assume it isn't any different than changing the more typical front disc brakes so shouldnt nessisarily be a problem?

$309.43 shipped from tirerack.com to order new rotors+break pads when i checked there.

I think rear is a bit different than front..but I have yet to work on mine

I am in need of rear pads, though..so I'll find out shortly how much (if any) different it is.

Front and rear disc brakes are the same as far as replacement and are very easy to do. With my car I just take off the calipers, pads, then the rotor. The rotor is held in with a screw which can become rusty and the head can be easily stripped. I just take a ball peen hammer to the screw, a few whacks then unscrew.

IMO it's better to change the brakes yourself. You'll save quite a bit of money and you'll learn mechanics at the same time.

The clicking you're hearing could be the anti-rattle clips (If applicable).

Get a Haynes or a Chiltons. Too bad Bentley doesn't make a Mazda manual.

Yeah, they're pretty easy. A little time consuming (Maybe 30 minutes per wheel) but one of the easier things to do on a car. Now, if you have to change out your calipers, then you have a quite a bit of work to do.

Another question, brake pads, I guess there's a million different types. Does it make a big deal or just go with the best price. OEM ones i found for something like 190 for all 4 wheels which seems expensive. For rotors I found $227.42 for OEM ones(shipped) which seem reasonable looking at other makers. Anything to look for? http://www.drivewire.com I was looking at OEM parts from that site never heard of it... I was also looking at tirerack with the price of 309 for everything shipped all non oem parts, just the cheapest they had.
