Uneven brake wear?

So I was swapping back to my summer tires the other day and I checked my brake pad thickness.

Rears have way more life than the front, no surprise there.

But on the front pads, the outside pad was thicker than the inside pad by about 1mm. The pads also had a gap at the top between the pad and the rotor, whereas the midsection of the pad sat perfectly flush with the rotor.

Is that a problem? Any idea what would cause that?

For the outside pad being thicker than the inner one, maybe dry/dirty slide pins?

For the gap you're talking about, I think you're might be talking about the taper that some pads have at the edges?

maybe, maybe not...

like these, they have a taper at each end

Yeah, the slide pins like previous poster said or bearing surface where those tangs on the pads ride against the caliper support bracket. A lot of time that area on the support bracket is covered in a piece of sheet metal to make the caliper slide easier. Those pieces of sheet metal wear get dings or dents from use. They can impede the caliper moving freely.

1mm isn't a huge difference but its only going to get worse unless you fix the problem (obviously). Greasing the slide pins should do the trick.

ah didn't realize some brake pads were tapered. that would make sense.

the rear brakes did not have the taper. they were flush all the way up/down as far as i could tell. is that common to have the fronts tapered and the rears not?
