UnEpic - Metroidvania game on Steam

Bored and needed a new game, so I gave this one a shot at $7.99. So far it's pretty damn good.

Usually I wait for games like this to go 50% off or greater, but reading through the forums, and seeing the actual developer post there and try to help people - well, I'm all for supporting devs that actually respond and try to help their customers, so I bought it.

It's a 2D game like the old Metroid or Castlevania (duh), set in a dungeon your character finds himself in. Tons of loot, spells, and a lot of looking around for secrets and treasure as you battle a large variety of mobs with different characteristics that keep combat fresh and interesting.

I have a level 7 sword/bow guy now in the second large area, and the game says it has over 200 rooms, which will make it huge since I've only uncovered about 30 rooms so far.

Anyone else try this yet? Check out the vids on Steam and give it a try if you like these kinds of games.

Desura has a demo of it.

Played it enough to beat that worm boss. It's full of amusing geekiness and those kinds of easter eggs to make you smile but it's not my cup of tea... more like the kind of game to play as a diversion.

I didn't see the gamepad icon on the Steam page. How well does this work with one? 'Cause that's the only way to play a Metroidvania game.

I'm using a 360 controller, which controls all movements/attacks/etc, and the keyboard for some things. It is kind of weird, but you can't open the map on the controller (or I haven't found it, have to hit 'M'). What is nice though, is you can hotkey items, so I have different weapons, spells, and potions on my 1 to 0 keys.

How to get an Unepic Steam Key if you bought the July Jubilee Indie Royal Bundle:

1) Download the game from your Indie Royale Page or on Desura using the Desura key.
2) Open the game, click the "sign up" button in the top right and input your email.
3) The game asks you to put in a password it has sent out theoretically. In reality, it wants your serial key.
4) Your serial key isn't the Desura key on your Indie Royale Page, use the "ingame items" key that starts with iroa from your Indie Royale page.
5) After putting in your key, go here and use the account you just registered to log in: http://www.unepicgam...m/en/myzone.php
6) Click the "request steam key" button. If it goes through, you've got your key. If not, you have to wait for another key dump. The developer gets them in limited quantities and has had to request more multiple times.

Y button is the map on mine, but hotkeys and such don't really work all that well on it. I can sometimes get them to bind, but it tends to forget them when I do.

I'm enjoying it. The one thing that bugs me is that you have to teleport back to save, but that really isn't an issue, you can get anywhere in just a couple of minutes.

Got it. Liking it. Some funny lines so far. Don't care for the respawning enemies though. And hotkey management is a little clumsy...or maybe I just need to get used to it.

I think it's funny that this game is getting all this attention all of a sudden. I guess it's because it was just released on Steam. I got it from one of those indie bundles quite a while back. Anyway, as others have mentioned, it's a great metroidvania style game and I would highly recommend it.
