Hello. I've never had to deal with the prospect of unemployment, nor have I ever known anyone to. So I'm somewhat in the dark as to how it all works. Can you apply if you weren't fired/laid off from your job? I'm about to quit, because of mistreatment and horrible scheduling (barely any hours). During the time it takes to find a new job, am I legible to apply for unemployment, or no? Thanks.

There are a lot of different circumstances that you can file for unemployment with. Your best bet is to go to your state's unemployment website and look for the answer there.

California's unemployment website

Just type the name of your state and EDD into a search engine and it should come up. If you quit I don't think you can apply, because one of the requirements is to be "Unemployed through no fault of your own." But, you should look it up an dcall anyways.

Good luck.

Depends if you in an "at-will" state. They can basically fire you for any reason (other than race, sex, etc.). Your State website can tell you more. In addition you can claim unpaid or unlawfully garnished wages based on your state labor laws....that is seperate from unemployment.
