Some of you already know that I was recently laid off. I twas a terrible situation that I was let go and I was given severance pay. For some odd reason I feel bad taking out Unemployment. People make it seem like it's a bad thing to take unemployment. I was researching it and it doesn't seem so bad. Here in Texas the employer pays for Unemployment Insurance so its not like tax payers are fitting the bill.

My question is how do people of AT feel? Should I take out the unemployment and start finding a job, or should I pitch some pennies HARDCORE and find a new job without the unemployment?

I need income so I am leaning toward taking the unemployment....but it seems like sometimes society looks down on people who take out unemployment.

You really want my take? You already pay into the system, so don't feel bad about taking out from the system. That said, move on from the horrors of your old job, whatever they may be, and get yourself a new and better job, ASAP. Don't ride the gravy train too long just because you can, but let it tide you over until you get yourself situated.

Good luck.

Dude how many years have you paid tax for? Now you're down on your luck and you need something back from the system you paid into to do the same for everyone else all these years. All the people double-claiming benefits and defrauding the state and you're not taking it when you're entitled? Go sign up, man.

You paid into the pot; now it is time to take it back out.

Do it for as long as you legally can.

Unemployment is paid for by your employers. I am not sure what all these people are talking about "paying in" and taxes for.

Please don't feel bad about taking the money because it is your former employer that will be footing the bill, not society. This is not welfare. This is exactly what it was designed for.

Take unemployment. No idea how long you will be out of work so don't pass on the help now.

We could certainly get into a P&N-style discussion about whether employers truly pay anything, but I won't at this time. At the very least, if the OP was unjustly laid off, he could stick it to his former employer by potentially raising their unemployment insurance rates a bit. If he doesn't claim, it won't affect their rates.

Take it but if you get severance pay, you won't be able to get unemployment until that runs out. So if they gave you 8 weeks severance pay, you have 8 weeks before you can get it. Might vary by state but that's one of the questions here in WI.

But remember you'll have to pay extra in taxes at the end of the year because unemployment compensation isn't taxed when you get it, it's taxed at tax time.

I was "forced to resign" a while back. I signed up for Unemployment, qualified, and took my unemployment pay toured Australia for a month. Given i had gone some interviews during the time that i was given a job offer before i left for Australia. But even if i hadn't i would still have gone.

Your previous employer paid for it; they laid you of, might as well get a little more out of them before you move on. But thats just me.

Yes. As long as you're actively searching for jobs, there's no problem with unemployment help.

Unemployment compensation isn't welfare. It's insurance. If someone crashed into your car, would you feel guilty for their insurance paying for the damage? You shouldn't feel bad about it at all. :)

If you need it, use it. It's why it's there.

Don't soak it for everything you can get, and get a new job asap. Seriously, that's why it's there.

It's people that bleed the system for every free penny they can get that piss me off. There are people who actually NEED food stamps. There are people who actually NEED welfare. There are people that actually NEED unemployment. Too often, people are just plain lazy and use those programs as a crutch to avoid having to carry their own societal weight - and that's where I (and I suspect most people) have the real problem.

From the sound of your post, you're not one of those people.

You wouldn't claim your insurance if you got in an accident?

"Employer" paying insurance is effectively the same as you getting paid less that much.

Like everyone else here is saying, take it. You're clearly not the type of person who's going to try and milk the system for all it's worth just because you can, so why feel bad about it?

Not in my neck of the woods. You worked for it, you take it when you need it.
