just traded in my 9800xt for a new pny 6800gt today and i am wondering if it is underperforming. As much as i do not trust 3dmark programs, i do use them to compare my computer to changes i make in it. with 3d2001se, my score is unchanged at around 15900 or so. WIth 3D2005, it jumped from 2200 ro around 4400. I tired to use the search function of ORB and i couldn't find squat for 6800gt's. Are these good numbers or not?

second reason to think that my 6800gt is when i play tribes:vengeance (GREAT game, go out and buy it!). On my 9800xt, at 1024 res, all Very High, 2AA/16AF, i would get about 30ish fps at high play. Now with the exact same settings on my 6800gt, i get only 40ish. what gives?

my specs are:

amd 2800+
1 gig pc2700 ram
PNY 6800gt, dets. 66.93

we need more specs. what amd processor? what mobo? mobo drivers?
my first suggestion is to use driver cleaner. if you went straight from an ATI card to an nVidia card, you're bound to have problems. My suggestion: reboot into safe mode and run Driver Cleaner. I would at least have it remove all ATI drivers and do a CAB Cleaner. Personally, I'd uninstall the nVidia drivers and reboot into safe mode and clean ALL drivers then run Cab Cleaner. Either way

Your 3dmark 05 seems right but 2001 is fairly low. Are you running Athlon XP2800+???? It might be a good idea to spring for an A64 system considering the prices.

Best overclocking socket 754 board by DFI = $100
A64 3400+ @ 2.4ghz = $200

In your case I am assuming yu are running an XP processor since you have PC2700 corresponding to 166FSB of the XP Processor. This is definately slowing you down. Try to increase the resolution along with AA/AF to prevent the game(s) being cpu-limited as much as you can. When you get extra cash, just get A64.

i only got this cpu/ram/mobo system like 4 mos. ago. i really don';t want to upgrade all to an am64. How much of a difference would a 3200+ get me and how cheaply could i get one? is it worth it?

amd xp2800+ (Barton)
1 gig Crucial pc2700 ram
PNY 6800gt, dets. 66.93
ABIT Nforce 2 NF7, latest drivers

3dmark 2001 is very CPU dependant. You will see people using it to achieve CPU overclock records, not graphics overclocks.

A 3200 A64 will give you a good boost. Also at 1024 the new cards really do not stretch their legs. Try a higher resolution and you will see some nice gains.

Yeah 3d mark 03 and 05 are almost all gpu dependent unlike 01. The 6800 shows performance at 1280x1024 or 1600x1200 with all the eye candy on, the lower settings won't show much gain.

I think you are worried over nothing.

Your 01 score will not likely go up much, & 4400 is about right for 05.

3dmark 2001 is mostly a cpu/memory test these days if you've got a fairly fast graphics card. You've got a slowish processor, and slow single buffered ram. If you're mother board allows you just overclock the processor, and/or speed up timings on the ram. Here's a particularly good site for info about ram:

Lots of overclock forums (such as the anandtech one) have a sticky at the top about how to overclock.
