Undergrad research? - Anyone ever done it?

I've been in corp IT for the last 4.5 years (Financial Industry), Security, networking, virtualization--but now I'm back finishing a CompSci degree and I'd love to get my hands dirty again by doing some undergrad research.

But I'm having trouble thinking of worthy ideas--advice?

Interesting, but not really my area -- I'm more involved in virtualization/green etc.

Yeah, their site just says talk to faculty--guess I'll hit up one of my profs--I'd just like to see some examples of undergrad research projects so as to know what to expect.

yes, i have. i've been on two projects. from my experience its not you who comes up with the idea of what the research will be doing.

your teacher will be doing multiple research projects and you can talk to him to see if you can be apart of one.

That's pretty much how it works in the lab I work in. When I first joined the lab, there was a little starter project that everyone does to familiarize yourself with the techniques used. After that, my PI picked out something that he was interested in and handed it over to me. Wrote up a basic outline for execution with the help of a post-doc in the lab, talked it over with my PI, and then went about executing the project.

Without his suggestions and ideas, I would have no idea what kind of stuff to research.
