Underclocking Sony laptop.

Maybe this is the wrong place to ask but I'll go for it anyway.

I have a Sony Vaio S laptop. It has a i5-480M, 4 gigs of ram an a 60 gig ssd.

I got sick of dealing with all of Sony's invincible bloatware and moved to linux mint 11.

Anyway the battery life has taken quite a hit going from 6-4 hours. As far as a I know there is a packet that allows Linux to better handle the CPU usage, but I have so far been unsuccessful in installing it mainly because of my n00byness.

So I have turned to what I know best, and that is hardware. The i5-480M @ 2.66 is plenty fast, and I think that the battery life would benefit greatly from a underclock and undervolt.

With that said, does anyone have knowledge of or experience using a linux application that can do this?
And would it be safe to run over/underclocking software through wine?

Thanks
