Underclocking AMD Turion RM-77

i have a tx2z tabletpc, and it just runs hot a lot. i dont always need all the horsepower it has either, so i would like to slow it down. there used to be programs online to undervolt the cpu, possibly even turn down the clockrate. but from all the searching i can do i find all the links are dead.

any help?

this is all i get when i run that program

How long have you had it for, and has it always run hot? Might simply be in need of a nice dust cleanout if it's getting on a bit.

had it for a year... a cleanoout wouldnt hurt. its out of warranty anyway so i might as well, however i dont have the time to do so and also, it has always run hot, even since the day i got it new. its just the way the tx2z's are. they have poor cooling and fast hot cpu's in them...

select power saver from the power options in the system tray. this should force the CPU to run at the lowest multiplier through the power savings tech like EIST or AMD's version (CnQ?)

for whatever reason, when i select power saver its like the cpu gets crippled in speed. web browsing slows way down and battery life isnt effected much. it seems like it would be nice to lower the cpu voltage, but the bios on this laptop barely tells you the time.... im getting really tired of crippled bios's.

If forcing CnQ through PowerSaver mode doesn't help, then you are SOL. It should be forcing a 5x multiplier and low voltage state: you are unlikely to be able to achieve much better, even with full BIOS access.

for undervolting

I have my ZM-82 undervolted from 1.2V to 1.05V at full speed, 1.1V to 0.8V at half speed and 0.8V to 0.75V(the minimum) at low speed.

this worked! i set mine to the same voltages as you, and my fan slowed down considerably. just warm air coming out of the exhaust now, not burn-your-hand hot air.

thanks!

edit- update. i havent put this exe in my startup folder yet... just now the laptop was running at 91C, and it felt like it might start the bed on fire (yes vents are partially blocked). fired up this k10stat program, and literally in about 1 minute the temp rested around 70c. i still think its warmer then it should be, i think a re-paste of the heatsinks will do it good... but this program really works, and does so without effecting performance (the speed stepping changes seamlessly, i never notice it idles at 500mhz)
